Mickleham Parish Church is the resting place of several interesting characters:

Frank Cole was the gardener and friend to George Meredith at his home in Box Hill. He was often seen leading the donkey that pulled the elderly writer’s bath chair.

A small metal plane on his stone in the churchyard commemorates pioneer aviator, Douglas Graham Gilmour. This reckless daredevil was inspired by the first cross- channel flight to buy a two-seater monoplane.

Ultra-low flying was his speciality, to judge by his antics at Henley Regatta, when he kept his landing wheels in the water. The Royal Aero Club suspended his flying certificate - but to no avail. He crashed at Richmond Park in 1912.

Juniper Hall is now a field studies centre but it once housed fugitives from the French Revolution, including General D’Arblay and Talleyrand.

Novelist and diarist, Fanny Burney was certainly taken with the General - progressing from French lessons with him to marriage in the church.
